Clear the Shelters

Every August and September, Manatee County Animal Services looks forward to the arrival of Clear the Shelters. By that time of the year, we’ve usually endured a long, hot summer with an overcrowded shelter. Summer overcrowding can be attributed to the combination of kitten season and a seasonal increase of strays and owner surrenders. That’s why we are so excited for this month-long promotion dedicated to helping pets find homes.

Clear the Shelters is an annual, nationwide pet adoption drive. MCAS waives adoption fees for the entire month. The Clear the Shelters initiative seeks to help families find and adopt homeless pets. Since 2015, Clear the Shelters has resulted in more than half a million pet adoptions nationwide. From August 23 – September 19, MCAS worked diligently to get as many pets as possible into new homes. The hard work paid off — we adopted 167 pets during the promotion! We even extended the waived adoption fees for cats and kittens an additional 10 days since we still were overcapacity.

MCAS wants to thank all the adopters who helped make this such a success. We wish you and all your newly adopted pets a happy life together!

MCAS is Manatee County’s only open-admission shelter facility, taking in an average of 7 animals per day in 2020. Visit mymanatee.org/pets to see all adoptable pets and make your appointment to visit.
