Bradenton Seniors Welcome a Therapy Pony With Big Personality
Residents of The Cottage memory care community at Élan Manatee were in for a surprise when a small but spirited guest clip-clopped through their doors. Mr. Pickles, a miniature therapy pony standing just three feet tall, made his way from room to room, sparking conversations, laughter, and even long-forgotten memories with every step.
The visit was extra meaningful, thanks to a family connection that proves sometimes the best spontaneous surprises come from those closest to home. Lindsey Ryan, a Speech and Language Pathologist who founded Miracle Minis and serves as Mr. Pickles’ handler happens to be the daughter-in-law of current resident Michael Ryan. The arrangement keeps therapeutic care within the family, and shared with the entire community.

During his visit, Mr. Pickles worked the room like a professional, allowing residents to pet his coat, brush his mane, and share treats with him. His demeanor and size made him the companion, small enough to navigate wheelchairs and furniture but big enough to be accessible to everyone.
“Routine visits from guests like Lindsey and Mr. Pickles bring energy and life into our community,” said Shannon Scragg, Executive Director of Élan Manatee. “Seeing residents engage, laugh, and share stories — especially those living with dementia — creates spirited social connections that make every day feel alive and full of excitement.”
The success of the memory care visit has earned Mr. Pickles an encore return. He’s scheduled to meet the assisted living residents soon, where he’ll undoubtedly grow his Bradenton fan club.
Local media are invited to saddle up and join residents at his next visit. The senior living community took the attached photos, which are free for media use.
