Lakewood Ranch Medical Center Performs First Cardiac Ablation Procedure
Lakewood Ranch Medical Center has successfully completed its first cardiac ablation procedure, expanding the hospital’s advanced cardiac electrophysiology capabilities and providing patients in the region with a new treatment option for atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common type of heart rhythm disorder.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Jared Collins, cardiac electrophysiologist, and marks an important milestone in the continued growth of Lakewood Ranch Medical Center’s cardiovascular services.
Cardiac ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat atrial fibrillation by targeting specific areas of heart tissue responsible for abnormal electrical signals that cause irregular heart rhythms. The innovative technology utilized during the procedure employs a non-thermal approach that uses tissue-selective electric fields to treat targeted heart tissue while minimizing the potential for damage to surrounding structures.

Unlike traditional ablation procedures, which use extreme heat or cold to create lesions in heart tissue, the non-thermal approach used at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center relies on targeted electrical energy to treat abnormal heart rhythms. Clinical studies have demonstrated that this treatment is as safe and effective as conventional thermal ablation while offering shorter procedure times and potential benefits for both patients and physicians.
Atrial fibrillation occurs when the heart’s upper chambers, known as the atria, beat rapidly and irregularly. The condition can reduce the heart’s pumping efficiency and increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other cardiovascular complications.
