Miakka Golf Club Construction Underway

Miakka Golf Club

Miakka Golf Club, the highly anticipated private golf club along the banks of the scenic Myakka River less than 30 miles southeast of Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport, broke ground recently on its 18-hole, championship golf course designed by Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design and celebrated PGA TOUR player Paul Azinger. The course, which promises to be one of the most spectacular new private clubs in Florida, is expected to open in late 2025.

Led by Florida entrepreneur Steve Herrig, Miakka Golf Club is comprised of 1,100 acres solely dedicated to golf. It will include the 18-hole championship golf course, as well as a 12-hole, par-3 golf course, a lighted putting course, 360-degree driving range, and a 7-acre short-game area. The course will be ideal for walking and intends to develop a premier caddie program. The entire golf course will be sand capped with a proprietary blend of sand and Profile soil conditioner.

“We are thrilled to be underway,” said Herrig. “We have a fantastic team, and the site is simply incredible. The course design Fry/Straka and Paul Azinger have developed fits it perfectly. There’s a surprising amount of natural elevation change, and we have two miles of frontage along a beautiful stretch of the Myakka River. The setting is just incredible. When you couple this with the type of thoughtful amenities and services we envision, and a close-knit, invitation-only membership, I just can’t imagine a better golf experience anywhere in the country.”

All turf areas at Miakka except the greens will be sodded, and the entire course will have substantial underdrains to ensure fast, firm playing conditions year-round. Miakka Golf Club will be one of the first courses in Florida to use Stadium Zoysia grass on the tees and fairways. The club has established its own Zoysiasod farm on adjacent land and will be the first private course in Florida with its own such facility.

Other amenities at Miakka will accentuate the club’s friendly, relaxed ambiance and rustic, natural charm to encourage fun social interaction and strengthen the bonds of friendship among members. These will include a beautifully designed clubhouse featuring luxuriously appointed locker rooms, private massage rooms, and an inviting dining room and bar. The dining room will open onto an expansive patio with sweeping views and provide members with exceptional indoor/outdoor culinary experiences. The club also will offer a state-of-the-art performance center that will help maximize on-course performance for all levels, from amateurs to PGA TOUR players. It will integrate the latest swing-analysis technology, knowledgeable professional instruction and a club fitting facility focusing on individual customization. Also featured will be an innovative putting lab, indoor and outdoor hitting stations, and a PGA TOUR-quality fitness center equipped with the latest strength, flexibility, and cardio training equipment.

Surrounding the putting course will be a cluster of traditional cracker-style cabins to provide overnight accommodations for members and guests. Nearby, The Still, will be a charming, informal gathering spot overlooking a 38-acre recreational lake. Here, members and guests will relax over a favorite snack or beverage while enjoying the activities and games, such as golf simulators, fire pit, bocce, horseshoes and fishing.

A limited number of individual local and national memberships will be offered by invitation only, ensuring members of an intimate, golf-centered environment where tee times are not necessary.
