Threads of the Past, Pieces of the Present: Art Exhibit Showcases Hope, Purpose, and Creativity Beyond Dementia

Town Square University Parkway invites the community and local media to  experience a powerful evening celebrating the creativity, resilience, and humanity of  individuals living with dementia during its annual art exhibit, Threads of the Past, Pieces of the Present, on Wednesday, June 10th, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

The event will feature more than 70 pieces of artwork created by members of Town Square University Parkway, a medical-model adult day center serving older adults living with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke recovery, and other cognitive and physical challenges. The exhibit highlights an often-overlooked truth: a diagnosis does not eliminate a person’s ability to create, contribute, connect, and find purpose.

“Too often, dementia is viewed only through the lens of loss,” said Skyler Betts, Business Development Manager at Town Square University Parkway. “This exhibit challenges that narrative by showcasing what remains: creativity, imagination, emotional expression, and the desire to connect with others. Every piece tells a story.”

One of the evening’s featured attractions will be the debut of a collaborative poetry and art book created by Town Square members and staff. The project paired original artwork with poems developed through conversations, memories, and creative expression sessions. The resulting collection serves as both a work of art and a testament to the voices, experiences, and identities that continue to thrive despite cognitive decline.

The book was developed through a partnership between Town Square’s Art Studio and members who participated in the creative process, demonstrating how meaningful  engagement can foster confidence, purpose, and joy. Organizers hope the project will inspire families and healthcare professionals to rethink what is possible for individuals living with dementia.

The event will also feature a complimentary dinner, wine tasting, live entertainment, raffle baskets, and opportunities to meet the artists and learn more about innovative approaches to dementia care.

*Proceeds from the evening will benefit All 4 the Members and the Suncoast Aging Network, two organizations dedicated to supporting older adults and family caregivers throughout the region.

Media outlets are encouraged to attend and explore several compelling story angles, including:

  • The therapeutic benefits of art and creative expression for individuals living with dementia
  • The launch of a member-created poetry and art book – hope with diagnosis
  • Innovative approaches to helping older adults maintain purpose and identity after a dementia diagnosis
  • Local families navigating the dementia journey with hope and support
  • The growing need for dementia resources in Southwest Florida

The exhibit serves as a reminder that while dementia may change memory, it does not erase a person’s capacity for creativity, meaning, and connection.
